Bananas

The rest of the evening went by painfully slow. I spent very little time speaking to Alana for obvious reasons. What did she do? She was wrapped up in some reality show. I couldn’t tell you which one it was, but I recognized that it was reality-based from the shrill voices of the women screaming at each other. Alana tended to watch those shows when she was stressed and just wanted mindless entertainment, which I suppose is the appeal of those programs.

I spent the bulk of my time giving her the space she clearly needed. I decided to go for a night swim in the pool. Apparently, Maui also wanted to give Alana some room to breathe, and he dashed outside after I opened the sliding glass door. I swam laps for about half an hour, and then I spent another thirty minutes sitting on one of my patio chairs and staring out at the ocean. There was a full moon, and it cast a thick beam of white light on the rippling waves. You may be wondering how I can always spend such a long time staring at the ocean. Well, if you’ve been to Maui, or any of the other Hawaiian Islands, then you probably don’t wonder that. There is something hypnotic about the sea. Maybe it’s an instinctual link we all have to the water. It has a calming effect on my mind, better than anything else I’ve ever tried.

I somewhat expected that Alana might come outside at some point and talk about what had happened earlier, but she never did. While I was outside, I received a text message from Nancy stating that she had important things to report regarding the Marco Giordano case. I asked her what they were, and she texted back that she’d prefer to tell me in person. We set a time in the mid-morning to meet at the café in Lahaina where I’d met with Detective Kalani.

Alana’s mood hadn’t improved the next day. She told me right before she left for work that she intended to stop by Hani’s house on the way home. I told her I’d call Hani after my meeting with Nancy to check on her. Alana thanked me again for bailing out Hani. There was no more mention of her repaying me for the bail, not that I expected or even wanted it.

So why did I just bring it up to you then? I’m not sure. I just did. Perhaps I was hoping that because she’d apparently changed her mind on the bail that she might decide to withdraw her declaration that she was done with my best friend, but Alana didn’t mention Foxx or Ashley. I certainly wasn’t going to bring them up, either.

I went for another swim in the backyard pool, jogged three miles around the neighborhood, and concluded my morning workout by taking a long walk with Maui. The sun was shining and the temperature wasn’t too hot, so we had a pleasant stroll. Both of us seemed to be getting over the tension of the previous evening.
